 The company reduced capacity on its long-haul routes by 8.7 percent in the half year, and by 8 percent overall, Fyfe said. As a result it used less fuel and fired some workers. There were also fuel efficiency gains from better operation of aircraft.

Overall fuel use fell by 10 percent from the year earlier period. Full-time staff numbers fell 5 percent and there was an 11 percent reduction in overtime worked, the airline said.</description>
